Take Two, the parent company of 2K Sports, have been accused of taking realism in the replication of sports in video games ‘too far’. A recent article from Sporting News tells of multiple events where tattoo artists have practiced the use of their copyright to their art in suing the sport video game companies of displaying their art without consent.
Although the artists rightfully have ownership over their art, it seems as if the athletes themselves whose bodies they are on have no say in the matter.
“In a legal sense, it’s the artists who have the copyright on their own unique works regardless of the canvas. That includes the human body.”
After all, the video game graphics are simply striving for a realistic representation of the athletes. This is just another example of how elite athletes identities are completely rooted in their sport careers. Any attempt at expressing themselves personally, such as through tattoos, is taken away from them by someone somewhere on the way. More and more, athletes are considered as commodities. They have very little control over how they are represented in public. Even their bodies are not ‘their own’.
