Carleton University Athletics is bringing awareness to the inequality issues that women’s varsity sport athletes face and trying to improve the experience of its female athletes. The article “Gender Equity Committee Looking to Bring Balance to Varsity Sports at Carleton” outlines some of the issues of gender inequality faced by female athletes including lack of funding, unequal access to facilities and time slots, and lack of promotion of women’s games. For many female athletes varsity sports is their last chance to play and having to deal with being treated unequally is unfair.
Gender inequality in sport is not a new topic, women’s sport has always received less coverage, less prime time TV slots and less funding. There is still a lot of stigma and stereotypes that circulate in the sport community that has impacts on the inequality faced by female athletes. The article “The Impact of the Media on Gender Inequality within Sport” discusses how the lack of coverage of women’s sports influences sport consumers to believe that women’s sports are not as worthy or important as their male counterparts. Due to the modern world we live in many of opinions are formed based on what we see in the media. If women’s sport received more equal coverage then many of the stereotypes would dissipate and the other main factor of less funding could be improved upon as well. Women are just as capable at playing sports as men are and it is time the media supported that.
