Ryan Reaves Doesn’t Stand for Racism In or Outside of the NHL

In the recent months of the national hockey league there was plenty of effort to get the league up and running in a safe bubble to allow the league to start the play-offs so they could finish the season. When the play offs began there was a serious issue that caused the NHL to pause the playoffs due to the request of the players.

On May 25th the death of George Floyd shook the world has racism still flows within our continent and across the World. Ryan Reaves is an African Canadian who was in the bubble playing for the Las Vegas Golden Knights. Reaves took to Instagram on June 3rd for blackout Tuesday and so did other teammates of his such as Mark Stone.

During this time there was a group of 7 players who created an organization named Hockey Diversity Alliance. For the purpose of promoting hockey for everyone, including all races so everyone can enjoy the sport and not feel like minority, the goal is to make everyone feel equal and for racism not to be an issue. However, Reaves isn’t one of the co-founders but other plays such as his good friend Chris Stewart and his on-ice rival Evander Kane are on the list of founders. Reaves still spoke out for them even though his on ice rival came forward and asked Reaves to do so. Hyperlink Reaves main goal is to increase diversity in hockey and exposing the game to minority communities to show that everyone can put on a pair of skates and hold a stick.

Unfortunately, racism is still very prominent in our society today. However, with support and advocation minority communities could rise above racism and racial views and provide equal opportunity for all. But in the case in the NHL white players such has Tyler Seguin kneeled during the national anthem to show his support to the Black Lives Matter incident.
