It is no secret that men’s sports are promoted more than women’s on television and social media. Despite the growing popularity of female sports and portrayal of female athletes, women’s sports coverage is still majorly lacking. The “Big 4”, the NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA, are predominantly male industries. Due to their ever growing sponsorships, they have much more public exposure. Since the early 2000s, sports media outlets have expanded their live coverage of women’s sports, although not anywhere near the level of men’s. However, news broadcasts and highlights continue to lack coverage of women’s sports, contributing to the notion that sports are exclusively for men.
The lack of coverage of women’s sports does not only affect the women competing, but also affects younger generations. Female athletes are the role models that young girls need. It is essential for young girls to see successful women athletes who, despite the adversity they may face, are still able to set an example for younger generations.
September 11 2021, marked an important day in female sports, particularly tennis. The 2021 US Open women’s finals match between Emma Raducanu and Leylah Fernandez gained viewership from 2.44 million people worldwide. This match was the most watched match in women’s tennis that did not feature Serena Williams. Surprisingly, the men’s match between Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic only gained 2.05 million viewers. The fact that the women’s match was more watched than the men’s is optimistic for women’s sports everywhere. With luck, women’s sports viewership will grow and gain the recognition it truly deserves. And where better to start than with two amazing young tennis players!
