StFX Vied for Two Championships on Return from Non-Sport Season

Fall sports are coming to an end can only mean one thing, it will soon be time to crown the champions of women’s rugby and men’s football. With the rugby championship happening on Sunday, the X-Women will be taking on the undefeated Acadia Axe-Women. StFX have been the reining AUS champions since 1998, with the only loss being to Acadia in 2015. The X-Women have a record of 3-3 during this year’s regular season which means they will need to have their best game, with the help of seasoned veterans including AUS most valuable player, Dani Franada, in order to clinch the championship.

Men’s football has a different story. Coming off a not-so-great season in 2019, the X-Men were determined to return to the Loney bowl as they had done in 2018. With the help of rookie quarterback, Silas Fagnan, the X-Men are currently 4-0, making them one of two undefeated teams in USPORTS this year. The X-Men have their final two regular season games on the next two Saturday’s, and if they win the first one, they will be guaranteed first place heading into the playoffs.

These two teams from StFX are showing great strength and togetherness as they head into the final stretch of their respective seasons. The majority of the recognition should go towards the coaches, as it’s Mike Cavanaugh and Gary Waterman who have prepared their athletes, physically and mentally for these important games all season. These programs are more of a family than a team, with everyone always looking out for their teammates, on and off the field. We can only hope that soon StFX will be able to add two new banners to our collection. Go X Go!
