An Abusive System

One of the biggest child sex cases in US history. Larry Nassar, a former doctor for the United States women’s national gymnastics team has been sentenced to 175 years in prison. Many athletes from the US women’s gymnastics team testified against a notorious serial child molester, these testimonies were not only against Larry Nassar but also against an entire system that allowed this to continue to happen. These heartbreaking incidents showed there was a lack of empathy and respect towards the athletes and a flawed system that allowed this to keep happening.

During the time of abuse of hundreds of girls, one girl came forward to report her abuse. Her name is Mckayla Maroney. Shortly after her abuse she proceeded to report the incident to the FBI, who did not document her abuse until over a year after she filed her statement. FBI newest director Christopher Wray apologized for the mistreatment and “lack of empathy” towards Mckayla Maroney and how this situation was handled by now a former FBI agent. “I am sorry that so many people let you down again and again” Wray stated to the victims. They had the chance to put a stop to him years before it could get worse, and they failed. “The FBI has strengthened their policies, systems, procedures and training” to ensure something like this never happens again said FBI director Wray. Hundreds of girls who have been abused by Larry Nassar have still been waiting to hear from the FBI about the mistake in the case. During testimony in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee Simon Biles, an Olympic gold medalist for gymnastics stated, “to be clear, I blame Larry Nassar, but I also blame an entire corrupt system that enabled and perpetrated his abuse.”

This was not only the fault of one person, this was an entire system that had the knowledge, reports, and evidence but who still did nothing to put an end to this abuse and for that let this man hurt and scar hundreds of young girls forever.
