Calgary Infernos Win the Clarkson Cup

The Calgary Infernos of the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL), were crowned the 2018-2019 Clarkson Cup champions after defeating the Canadiennes de Montreal 5-2 and winning their second championship in franchise history.

The CWHL has been gaining traction in the country, acquiring significantly more viewers as the season progressed and with the finals getting some coverage from major sports broadcasting networks. This is a big step for the league as it is known by most that men’s sport receives the majority of coverage from the major sports networks.

With the some of the top female players in the world playing for both the Inferno and Canadiennes, it makes sense for the finals to be broadcasted nationally as the more publicity, the more likely it will gain traction with the public. Female athletes are gaining popularity after the more recent NHL All-Star weekend where a few of the top female players such as Kendall Coyne-Schofield took part and did very well. This was a headline of the entire weekend and is a large factor responsible for the growing interest in women’s hockey.
