The Impact of Coronavirus on Women’s Sport

Women have always been underrepresented in sport and the current pandemic is hindering their ability to gain recognition and appreciation for their hard work and dedication.

Before the first phase of the pandemic, female athletes were already facing inequalities with regards to financial income in elite sports. The first phase of lockdown has interfered with female athletes’ ability to access facilities and the equipment needed to perform.

The perceived long-term impact of the pandemic on financials in sport is astonishing. Recent studies have shown that the ongoing pandemic is placing a great deal of stress on female athletes and is impeding elite women athletes’ abilities to provide for their families financially. Terri Harper, an elite female fighter, has stated that she had financial worries during the first phase of lockdown, as she never knew when her next fight would be; this left her in a worried state for the majority of lockdown phase one.

The pandemic is not only interfering with elite female athlete’s financial standings but also their mental health. There are a variety of sport psychologist stepping in to address elite athletes’ struggles during lockdown.
