Toronto Maple Leafs young star Auston Matthews is facing disorderly conduct charges from an incident that took place in Arizona. According to the police report, on May 26th a security guard was doing paperwork in her vehicle outside of Matthews’ condo when she heard someone trying to open her locked doors at 2 a.m. The guard, a military veteran with PTSD, stated that the group of boys appeared to be intoxicated. She explained it wasn’t funny and told them to leave. The report read:
“After he (Matthews) walked away some distance, Auston pulled his pants down, bent over and grabbed his butt cheeks.”
– Security Guard Fayola Dozithee
The talk in Toronto is now focused on whether Matthews’ bad behaviour displays immaturity that might not be ready for captaincy or if it was just a bad mix of youthfulness and alcohol. Captain Underpants memes and butt jokes came out almost immediately after the statement became public. Not being taken seriously is not something the Maple Leafs organization wants.
“As the Toronto Maple Leafs, we really pride ourselves on doing things right – on the ice, off the ice, treating people (right). It is an unfortunate situation.”
– Head Coach Mike Babcock
Matthews and the team talked Wednesday morning.
“He’s taking it very seriously,” defenseman Morgan Rielly said. “We understand that these issues are serious and it’s not something that we take lightly. That’s how he’s approaching it. He understands what the situation is and as teammates, we’re going to support him. We understand that these issues are serious and it’s not something that we take lightly. Auston spoke to media after training camp regarding the allocation,”I mean, I, you know, regret any of my actions that would ever, you know, put a distraction on the team or distress an individual.” Matthews’ lawyer and agent have not responses to interview questions.
Compounding this situation is the fact that the Toronto Maple Leafs were not aware about this incident until it came up on Twitter this week, yet this happened approximately four months ago.
It’s hard to say how much damage Matthews has done to his reputation but majority can agree that the highly respected John Tavares is looking like a perfect option for captain.
